“Have a word with them, would you?”
Ever been asked to pass on second hand feedback?
It’s enough to make your heart sink not least because it’s rarely good news. It’s also likely you know very little about the situation, and you may even disagree with what you’ve been asked to say.
But a great way to look at this is as an opportunity to practise facilitating rather than ‘leading’ feedback. It’s your chance to ask great questions and help the team member to:
- Feel more in control
- Develop their own insights
- Decide what action to take.
Developing your skills in ‘telling less / asking more’ doesn’t only help here, it will change every feedback conversation you ever have.
